Sega is a Japanese multinational video game and entertainment company that has produced several multi-million-selling game franchises, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, and Yakuza.

In the official announcement, Sega described this deal as a ‘friendly takeover.’ It is going to acquire the entirety of Rovio’s outstanding shares and options which has been already been agreed to by Rovio’s board of directors.
Sega plans to execute this deal completely by September 2023. By acquiring Rovio, Sega will be able to increase its presence in the mobile gaming sector. The CEO of Sega Sammy Holdings, Haruki Satomi said that this deal will also help Rovio to expand outside of mobile gaming using Sega’s resources.
The mobile gaming market has especially high potential, and it has been Sega’s long-term goal to accelerate its expansion in this field. I feel blessed to be able to announce such a transaction with Rovio, a company that owns Angry Birds, which is loved across the world.
On May 9, 2012, Rovio Entertainment announced its Angry Birds series of games to breach the 1 billion downloads mark. The total included combined download stats for Angry Birds (December 2009), Angry Birds Seasons (October 2010), Angry Birds Rio (March 2011), and Angry Birds Space (March 2012).
The IP has also released two animated movies – The Angry Birds Movie (2016) and The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019). Both have been successful releases at the box office worldwide.
