Rumors suggest Tencent has been developing an Elden Ring mobile game – There are various rumors floating around stating Tencent has been working to create a mobile version of the 2022 Game of the Year, Elden Ring. This mobile game will be different as the developers might need to tweak various things to incorporate in-game monetization, something that was missing from the original version. Here’s everything we know about the Elden Ring mobile game till now.
Rumors suggest Tencent has been developing an Elden Ring mobile game
The Chinese multinational company Tencent bought the licensing rights for Elden Ring by FromSoftware in 2022. It was the same year Tencent also acquired a 16 percent stake in FromSoftware.
According to Reuters, three of their sources have claimed that Tencent is now working to adapt Elden Ring into a mobile version. There is a high chance the game will feature in-game app purchases like other mobile games, making it quite different from the original title. We will have to see how much of the story and lore will be kept while adapting the game for mobile devices.
My latest: Tencent has been working to adapt “Elden Ring” into a mobile version, three people familiar with the matter said, as it searches for a new hit. Tencent acquired the licensing rights in 2022 and set up a small team to work on a prototype. But progress has been slow. 1/ pic.twitter.com/NTQelupq53

Apart from its immersive and expansive lore, Elden Ring is also known for its high difficulty when it comes to boss fights. It will be a challenge for Tencent to determine whether to keep the difficulty same to sate hardcore players or tone it down significantly so that even an average mobile gamer can play it. Mobile games developers have often been criticized because they lower the bar of entry too much to attract more players.
Apart from PUBG Mobile, Tencent’s recent mobile games have not been so successful. The game company closed a project based on the popular “Nier” franchise in December 2023.
The original Elden Ring was released for $60 and sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide, making it the second-most sold game of 2022. Tencent’s mobile version will be different from this premium one-time purchase model. It might lean more towards the popular Genshin Impact monetization model.
Tencent and FromSoftware have neither revealed any details about this game nor given any official announcement yet.
