The mobile game Honor of Kings from Tencent generated $256.2 million in gross revenue in August 2021, representing a 3 percent increase over August 2020. The honor of Kings generates roughly 95 percent of its revenue from China. Taiwan contributes about 2 percent of its revenue.
Next in grossing was MiHoYo’s Genshin Impact followed by Sony Aniplex’s Fate / Grand Order and Niantic’s Pokémon GO. Across the App Store and Google Play, mobile games generated $7.7 billion in revenue in August 2021, representing an 8.6 percent year-over-year increase. The United States accounted for 28 percent of all worldwide player spending in August 2021, with approximately $2.1 billion in spending. China, where Google Play is unavailable, ranked third for revenue at 17.5%. Japan was second with 20.8 percent.
A record $133.8 million in revenue was generated in August 2021, a rise of 13.6 percent from August 2020, marking the best month for Fate/Grand Order in two years. Six years ago, the game celebrated its sixth anniversary, which coincided with a surge in player spending. About 5.5 billion dollars have been accumulated in lifetime revenue for the game.
