Microsoft has teamed with Epic Games to make Fortnite available on Xbox Cloud Gaming for free, with no membership necessary. You may play the battle royale title through the web browser on an iPhone, iPad, Android smartphone, or Windows PC if you have a Microsoft account in one of the 26 streaming-enabled countries. Both controllers and touch are supported in the streaming version. Creative mode is likewise free, but you must pay to face AI villains in the Save the World campaign. To play the game on mobile, go to Xbox’s website in a web browser and sign in with their Microsoft account. Following that, gamers can begin playing games using either touchscreen controllers or an Xbox controller. The game was previously available in browsers via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but the latest version will be available for free to anybody with an Xbox account. This is Microsoft’s first totally free game to be added to its cloud service. Similar browser-based Fortnite streaming is also available through Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming service, however, a subscription is required.
Epic allowed players to purchase V-Bucks (the game’s currency) directly from Epic instead of through the App Store, bypassing the stores’ cut for the purchase price — a move that explicitly violated Apple’s App Store agreement. Fortnite was removed from both Apple and Google’s mobile app stores in 2020. Free Fortnite gameplay could draw attention to Apple’s policies while softening the blow for Microsoft, Epic and gamers.
