Gaming in India: Government Task Force recommends games based on Mahabharata and classic movies – With the boost of the video gaming industry in recent times, companies and Governments across the globe are looking for ways and means to unleash the full potential of this field. So is the case with India, where recently a government task force has been formed by the Union information and broadcasting ministry to explore and develop India’s gaming sector. It has proposed making video games based on Indian epic stories like Mahabharata and Ramayana and classic Indian films such as Sholay and Bahubali as plot inspirations.
India is a land of rich folklore, diverse cultures, and epic dramas with vivid plots. This can be narrated and discovered differently through online or story-based video games. Realizing the potential it has, the I&B ministry calls for innovative ways to look for in creating games based on these epic dramas. As part of its Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign to commemorate 75 years of Indian Independence, the ministry has earlier released a collection of online games named the Azadi Quest.

Headed by I&B ministry joint secretary Vikram Sahay, it suggests that “applied games may be included in the school curriculum, and financial incentives may be provided for enterprises developing educational games. ” It adds, “A survey of applied game applications across various sectors may be conducted, and avenues for international demand for applied games may also be explored.”
The task force recommended the systematic and structured development of games based on Indian literature as well as shaping young talents in the gaming field. The task committee further recommended utilizing the network of Atal Tinkering Labs and pushing after-school mentorship programs by gaming firms in terms of mentoring in schools. Such epic-themed video games have the potential to turn India into a center for MMORPGs, which have had tremendous success in the global market.
If games could be developed the right way in which the task force has envisioned, it might boost the Indian gaming market like never before. However, proper attention should be given to developing games with excellent graphics, and gameplay mechanics apart from focusing on the storyline.
