— Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) December 31, 2022
Sweeney tweeted “Next year on iOS!” with a picture of a Fortnite player gazing up at pyrotechnics that spells out 2023 to ring in the new year. In order to comply with the recently passed DMA (Digital Markets Act) rule in Europe, Apple is apparently intending to permit sideloading and alternative app stores with iOS 17 next year. The law and its implementations theoretically permit Epic Games to reintroduce Fortnite to iOS, just not via the App Store.
Recall that Fortnight had been prohibited by Google and Apple in 2020 because it had broken the regulations for app stores. Nevertheless, it was a fan favourite among the best games of the year. In accordance with the guidelines established by the IT giants, they will receive 30 per cent part of the money made through in-app sales. It was stopped by Epic Games, who also started their own in-app payment system in Fortnite that directly contravened the terms of service for Apple and Google’s app stores.
Epic Games sued the Cupertino-based digital behemoth after Fortnite was taken down from the App Store. “We are working for open platforms and legislative measures that will help all developers equally. And there will be one fierce battle!” stated Sweeney at the time.
