CWG 2026: Esports removed as a medal sport from Commonwealth Games 2026

CWG 2026: Esports removed as a medal sport from Commonwealth Games 2026 – The upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games will not feature esports as a medal event. The Games, which will be held in Australia, will feature three new medal events, but esports has not been included in the list. Organizers of the 2026 Commonwealth Games have not said why this is done.

The Commonwealth Games included esports as a pilot event for its 2022 edition in an effort to reach a younger audience. The esports events were created in collaboration with the Global Esports Federation and the British Esports Federation, as well as the Confetti Institute of Technology.

Teams competed in Dota 2, Rocket League, and eFootball tournaments during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, with both men’s and women’s tournaments taking place. Esports was a pilot event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, meaning that while medals were awarded, it was not an official sport honored by the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Details regarding the upcoming event were not included, with BBC News reporting that the Games’ organizing committee does not give specific reasons for the U-turn.

The Commonwealth Games have added inshore rowing, BMX and golf as new sports for the upcoming edition. In spite of popular esports titles such as Rocket League and Dota 2, they have failed to attract large audiences.

A spokeswoman for the 2026 Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee told BBC News: “Although they were not successful this time, the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Global Esports Federation will continue to work to incorporate this growing sport.”

The Global Esports Federation, one of the main parties behind the Commonwealth Esports Championships, is an organization that aims to popularize esports by organizing tournaments and working with game authorities and developers. This organization is mainly behind the Global Esports Tour, a tournament series featuring popular esports titles.

It is also worth noting that even though esports will not be an officially awarded discipline at the 2026 Games, esports may still be present at the event.
